For power-consuming AC loads with nonnegative real power and positive apparent power. This ratio does not determine leading/lagging behavior, phase angle, equipment suitability or capacitor size.

How to calculate power factor

Divide real power by apparent power after putting both values on the same scale. Use watts with VA, or kilowatts with kVA. The result is a ratio with no unit.

PF = W ÷ VA = kW ÷ kVA
Power factor percentage = PF × 100

This is the real-to-apparent power relationship explained in Fluke’s power factor guide. For 800 W and 1,000 VA, the ratio is 0.8, or 80%. Enter 0.8 into a calculator that asks for decimal PF, rather than 80.

The two unit selectors handle mixed scales. For example, 800 W divided by 1 kVA is still 0.8, because 1 kVA is 1,000 VA. Changing a selector preserves the entered quantity and keeps the editable number readable.

Use two readings that describe the same thing

A ratio is useful only when its inputs belong together. Use electrical real power and apparent power for the same load, over the same measurement period. For a three-phase total, both values must be totals; do not divide one phase’s watts by the entire system’s VA.

  • Measured input watts and measured VA: the intended inputs for finding operating PF.
  • A motor’s shaft-output watts: a different quantity. Mechanical output does not replace electrical input power.
  • A UPS’s advertised W and VA limits: two capacity limits can describe its rating, but their ratio is not a measurement of the connected load’s current PF.

The calculator checks whether the scaled real-power value exceeds apparent power. If it does, revisit the units and whether the readings describe the same load. It does not silently force the result down to 1.

Watts, VA and efficiency are different

Real power in watts and apparent power in VA are related by W = VA × PF, as shown in Eaton’s explanation of VA versus watts. That relationship does not tell you how much mechanical work a motor produces. Efficiency compares useful output with input power; PF compares real with apparent electrical power.

At unity PF, the numerical W and VA values are equal. At a lower PF, the same real power corresponds to more apparent power. The table is arithmetic, not a list of typical values for appliance types.

What does a zero result mean?

Zero real power divided by positive apparent power gives zero. With both values zero, there is no defined ratio, so a positive VA value is required. A PF of zero also cannot be used as a divisor to calculate current from watts alone.
